What is the difference between File Version and File Variants in FIlerobot?

When using Filerobot DAM, you will notice that we introduce the concept of File Version vs. File Variants. Please find the difference between the two hereunder:

  • FILE VERSION is a separate file with the same name and path saved on the Filerobot storage system with a different unique ID (UUID). It is important to notice that File versions count towards your Filerobot storage usage and can be used as separate files. You can change the active version of the image from the Filerobot Hub or access them individually. File Versions do not impact CDN Cache and traffic metrics.
  • FILE VARIANTS are truly CDN-processed URLs of the currently active File version. These CDN URLs are automatically generated with query parameters to represent your image editing while generating the File variants. So, file variants do not exist as separate files and do not consume Filerobot storage, but they count towards CDN cache and traffic metrics.
